The Cubs will send reliever Chris Carpenter to the Red Sox as compensation for letting Theo Epstein out of his contract.
Chicago and Boston will also exchange a player to be named later.
The process of settling compensation had taken four months to the day since Epstein quit the Red Sox.
Carpenter, a 26-year-old righthander, is a prospect who has played in 10 major league games.

Burnett Trade Becomes Official
A.J. Burnett is officially a member of the Pirates.
Pittsburgh and New York announced on Sunday night that they have completed a trade involving the right-hander.
In exchange for Burnett, the Yankees get 25-year-old right-hander Diego Moreno and 20-year-old outfielder Exicardo Cayones.
The Pirates will pay $13 million of the $31.1 million remaining on Burnett's contract, according to a sources.
The trade was agreed to on Friday, but Burnett had to compete a physical, which he did on Sunday.
"A.J. Burnett is a solid veteran starting pitcher with an above average pitch repertoire and potential to provide us with significant quality innings from our starting rotation," Pirates general manager Neal Huntington said in a statement released by the team.
O's Send Guthrie To Rockies
The Rockies acquired right-hander Jeremy Guthrie from the Orioles on Monday, a move that bolsters their young rotation.
In exchange, the Rockies sent reliever Matt Lindstrom and right-hander Jason Hammel to the Orioles.
The deal for Guthrie, the Orioles' Opening Day starter three of the past four seasons, was first reported by The Baltimore Sun.
